Jonathan Rhys Meyers: Suicide Attempt or Sobriey Relapse?

Jonathan Rhys Meyers was rushed to the hospital in London this week after a suspected suicide attempt involving a pills overdose, according to U.K. newspaper The Sun. Following an emergency call Tuesday night, paramedics found the 33-year-old star of the Tudors slumped on the floor of his London home. Rhys Meyers, who has long battled alcohol addiction, refused medical attention, and the police were called to intervene. A Scotland Yard spokesman tells People: "We can confirm we were called by the London Ambulance Service to an address in NW8 to report to a man refusing treatment. Police attended, and the man was taken by ambulance to a central London hospital. That was the end of our involvement." According to The Sun, this was not an accidental overdose, but  rather a "suicide bid" on the part of Rhys Meyers. "This is very sad," says one insider. "It was the opinion of those present that he tried to take his life." Another source, however, tells Us Weekly a different story. "It was not a suicide attempt. He did relapse and was hospitalized for that, but was released." The Irish-born Rhys Meyers has been quite open about his battle with alcoholism and his attempts to get sober. He's been arrested for public drunkenness on numerous occasions and done multiple stints in rehab. In fact, he just recently got out of a rehabilitation center in South Africa -- his fifth stab at quitting booze. The former Hugo Boss model and Bend It Like Beckham star was reportedly discharged from the hospital on Wednesday. When asked by The Sun how he was doing, he replied: "No comment." One of Rhys Meyers' neighbors, however, did have a comment: "Jonathan is a lovely guy. You see him all the time in the street. He says hello and is very pleasant. I hope he is fine."
