Britney Spears' VMA Promo: Go Behind The Scenes!

Promo reflects on Brit's career and inspirations while looking ahead to August 28 awards show.By Christina Garibaldi Britney Spears in her 2011 VMA promo Photo: Roderick Trestrail II/ MTV On Thursday (August 11), Britney Spears took over MTV when her Video Music Awards promo made its debut and MTV News was there when she filmed it. The 30-second promo interlaces Spears' latest hit "I Wanna Go" with her own "Slave 4 U," Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" and Madonna's "Everybody" as dancers dressed in Brit's most-famous outfits crowd around her. There's also a nod to Michael Jackson, with a poster on the wall that says "Billy Jean," in reference to MJ's hit "Billie Jean," and a dancer who mimics the late King of Pop's iconic moves. At the end of the promo, Spears stands in front of a wall that cryptically reads "A Tribute to Britney Spears" before the date of the VMAs — 8.28 — flashes on the screen. Spears, whose "Till the World Ends" is nominated for Best Pop Video and Best Choreography, filmed the promo last month in Miami, and MTV News was on the set for a behind-the-scenes look. "The general concept of what we are going for is basically called 'The Muse Factory,' " director Jahai Brightly explained. "It's where all your favorite artists that are going to be at the Video Music Awards this year meet and explore their influences and inspirations." The promo pulls from Spears' own musical influences from over the years, which is portrayed through the set design, wardrobe and, of course, through Brit herself. In the promo, Spears pays homage to Madonna, Michael and Janet, whom she calls "the people I've grown up listening to and totally inspire ." The promo doesn't just show the pop star's own musical icons; it also reminds us of what a musical force Spears is as well. "We are going to be exploring her past styles," Brightly said of Spears' classic looks. "In particular, past six styles that represent each of her albums, with the seventh one being the current incarnation." Spears, whose outfit was designed to represent her current style, is dressed in a custom-made studded leather jacket, a shredded black T-shirt and her signature cutoff jean shorts. The promo begins with Spears paying homage to her latest album, Femme Fatale. "I did the opening segment, where I'm at the mirror and I'm representing how many albums I've done, which is number seven," Spears said. Spears then begins her journey down memory lane, where she is surrounded by dancers dressed up in some of her signature video looks, such as the flight-attendant costume in "Toxic" and her infamous red catsuit in "Oops! ... I Did It Again." "I'm walking down a hallway and I'm seeing memorabilia of all my performances that I've done in the past," Spears said. "All my dancers are dressed up in my old outfits, which it's really cool." What do you think of Britney's VMA promo? Let us know in the comments! Hurricane Irene Survival Tips 'Jersey Shore'-Style

After flying to L.A. for the VMAs, the cast shares how they would have endured the storm's charge through New Jersey.By Eric Ditzian Pauly D and Vinny Guadagnino Photo: MTV News "We've warned the public," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Saturday as Hurricane Irene shut down most of the East Coast, "and now we have to deal with Mother Nature." That's when the cast of the "Jersey Shore" took out their grenade whistle and declared: So long, ladies! The storm whipped through the Tri-State area early Sunday morning (August 28), leaving thousands in New Jersey and Long Island without power, and causing dangerous floods in the Garden State. But housemates Snooki, Vinny, Deena and Sammi were safe and dry, having sauntered aboard a private jet and zipped away from the tri-state area and toward Los Angeles for the VMAs, pausing only for Vinny to tweet a picture of himself at the controls of the aircraft. "I was flying the plane, but that was on the ground. I was just messing around in the cockpit," he told us alongside his castmates a few hours after touching down in La La Land. "Being on a private jet, it's not that bad — except it didn't have wi-fi. Could you believe it?" Pauly couldn't, turning to his pal and declaring, "You've changed, bro! When your private jet doesn't have wi-fi and you gotta complain about it — Vinny problems!" Then again, they haven't changed much at all. Their suggestions for hurricane preparedness included battery-powered hairdryers, a healthy dose of GTL, and the suggestion, "If you're by the water, just be more not by the water." Luckily for them (and, perhaps, their old Jersey stomping grounds), the reality stars were far from the hurricane's path. Because if they were in the Heights, despite Irene's wrath, the "Shore" kids would be staging one heck of a bash. "We'd have a lights-out party," Pauly said. "You party for the whole duration," Added Ronnie, "Hey, a bottle of Ron-ron juice, let's go!" The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. 'Jersey Shore' Stars Make Their VMA Picks

Bruno Mars' 'Grenade' is Pauly D's favorite to take home a Moonman on Sunday night.By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Christina Garibaldi Deena and Snooki make their 2011 VMA picks Photo: MTV News At the Video Music Awards, the hottest names in pop culture come together at what ends up looking like one big televised party. And of course, the cast of "Jersey Shore" would never miss a party, which is why they hopped on a last-minute private jet to escape Hurricane Irene and get to L.A. in time for the show. But before the VMA partying gets under way, MTV News sat down with the cast and got them to talk serious business: guessing which artists will take home the Moonmen on Sunday night (August 28). Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, Cee-Lo Green, Kanye West and Eminem are all battling it out in the Best Male Video category. After some back and forth about who should take it home, Jersey housemates were still pretty split between the nominees, but the standouts were Bieber, Eminem and Kanye West. "If I was like 13, I'd hit that," Snooki said of 17-year-old Bieber. Pauly D was partial to Bruno's "Grenade," for obvious reasons. "Thank you for making a song about the girls my friend takes home," he joked. "Thanks, bro." The cast spent about as much time arguing about the pronunciation of Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass," as they did discussing the nominees for Best Female Video: Katy Perry, Adele, Minaj, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. But in the end, they seemed to think it was really only a two-woman race between Beyoncé and Gaga. So, why does Ronnie think Beyonce will win? "I'm gonna with Beyoncé 'cause she wins every category that she's in," he said (defying logic and facts, we might add). The experts have also been placing bets on who might nab Best Female at the VMAs. "I feel like Adele has to win one of these and this may be the one, just because among these people, she also feels like the outlier," Entertainment Weekly staff writer Kyle Anderson explained. "Everybody else is very polished and in the mainstream, and I like an outlier." The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards is underway. Natalie Portman First Post-Baby Film Role: Playing Angela Lansbury's Mom?

Is Natalie Portman's maternity leave over? The actress, who gave birth to son Aleph in June, is reportedly in "informal" talks for the lead role in a new indie drama. According to TheWrap, the 30-year-old Black Swan actress has been offered the starring role in Adaline, an indie film about a woman who stops aging after a strange accident. According to an earlier press release, the character "was killed in a car accident, until a simultaneous lightning strike resuscitated her and physiologically locked her in her late 20s. Adaline lives a solitary existence until she meets a man worth losing her immortality for." Katherine Heigl was originally attached to star, but dropped out in November. While the film sounds cool, the news is surprising -- if only because Portman seemed so excited about taking a long maternity leave. "I imagine I'm going to want to be home for years, just me and my baby," she told Newsweek in January. She did, however, note that her friends told her otherwise: "Everybody says after two months you go out of your mind." Maybe Portman is being tempted by Adaline because of the rare opportunity to work with another great actress: Angela Lansbury. The 85-year-old actress -- who has five Tonys, 15 Emmy nominations and three Oscar nominations -- has taken only two film roles in the past decade. If Portman signs on to play the immortal lead character, she won't only get to star with Lansbury -- she'll get to play her mother! That's an offer she won't get again, and perhaps reason enough for husband Benjamin Millepied to stay home with the baby for awhile.
